Root Canal Therapy

The words “root canal” often make patients anxious  –  but modern dentistry has made this treatment far simpler and more comfortable than ever. At Amber Arch Dental, Dr. Donovan Phillips provides gentle, precise root canal therapy designed to relieve pain, eliminate infection, and preserve your natural tooth for the long term.

Using advanced technology and a calm, patient-first approach, we make sure your treatment experience is efficient, comfortable, and stress-free.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal (also known as endodontic therapy) is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside the tooth. Each tooth contains a soft tissue called the pulp, which includes nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria enter this space  –  often due to deep decay, a crack, or trauma  –  the pulp can become infected or die.

Rather than removing the entire tooth, a root canal allows Dr. Phillips to clean out the infection, disinfect the canals, and seal the tooth to protect it from future damage. The treated tooth is then restored with a custom crown to ensure strength, stability, and function.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal

Common symptoms that may indicate a tooth infection include:

    • Persistent tooth pain or pressure

    • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after exposure

    • Swelling or tenderness around the gums

    • A small bump or abscess near the affected tooth

    • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth

    • Pain when biting or chewing

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, contact Amber Arch Dental as soon as possible. Treating infection early can prevent the need for extraction and protect the surrounding teeth.

The Amber Arch Difference: Modern Endodontic Care

At Amber Arch Dental, root canal therapy is a precise and comfortable procedure, thanks to Dr. Phillips’s experience and our investment in advanced dental technology.

    • CBCT 3D Imaging: We use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to capture highly detailed 3D images of your tooth and surrounding structures. This allows Dr. Phillips to identify infection, anatomy variations, and canal shapes that traditional x-rays might miss.

    • Digital Intraoral Cameras: High-resolution imaging helps you see exactly what we see  –  giving you peace of mind and understanding at every step.

    • Intraoral Scanning & 3D Printing: Our digital workflow allows us to design and print custom provisional restorations or guides with extreme precision, ensuring your crown or final restoration fits perfectly after treatment.

    • Comfort-Driven Dentistry: We use advanced anesthetic techniques and a gentle touch to ensure a virtually painless experience. Many patients describe root canal therapy with Dr. Phillips as no more uncomfortable than getting a standard filling.

Our Root Canal Process

    • Diagnosis & Planning – We start with a thorough examination, digital x-rays, and 3D imaging to determine the source of your pain and confirm whether root canal therapy is necessary. Dr. Phillips explains every step clearly so you know exactly what to expect.

    • Local Anesthesia & Isolation – The area around the tooth is numbed for complete comfort. A small protective barrier (dental dam) isolates the tooth to keep it clean and dry during treatment.

    • Removing the Infection – Dr. Phillips carefully opens the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using specialized instruments, he removes the infected tissue and cleans and shapes the internal canals.

    • Disinfection & Sealing – Once the canals are fully cleaned, they’re filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering.

    • Restoration & Protection – After your root canal, the tooth will be restored with either a temporary or permanent dental crown  –  depending on the extent of the damage. Crowns are crafted using our digital scanning and 3D printing workflow for the best fit and appearance.

This entire process usually takes just one or two visits, depending on the tooth’s complexity.

Why It’s Important to Save Your Tooth

Some patients wonder why a root canal is worth it instead of simply removing the tooth. Preserving your natural tooth has several advantages:

    • Maintains your natural bite and alignment

    • Prevents neighboring teeth from shifting

    • Protects jawbone density and structure

    • Avoids the need for more complex replacements like implants or bridges

    • Preserves your natural smile and confidence

With modern technology, root canal therapy offers predictable, long-lasting results  –  and helps you avoid unnecessary extractions.

Aftercare & Recovery

Following your root canal, mild tenderness or sensitivity is normal for a day or two. This can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Dr. Phillips will provide clear instructions for care, which may include:

    • Avoiding chewing on the treated side until your final crown is placed

    • Maintaining excellent oral hygiene to promote healing

    • Scheduling your follow-up appointment for final restoration placement

Once your crown is secured, you’ll be able to eat and smile comfortably again  –  with no pain and full function restored.

Common Myths About Root Canals

“Root canals are painful.”

Modern techniques and anesthesia make root canals virtually painless. Most patients feel relief from pain rather than discomfort.

“It’s better to just pull the tooth.”

While extractions are sometimes necessary, saving your natural tooth is almost always better for long-term oral health and function.

“Root canals don’t last.”

With proper restoration and care, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime.
